The Service Selection Board (SSB) interview is the most critical stage of defence selection — whether you have cleared NDA, CDS, AFCAT, or any other defence exam. Unlike written tests that evaluate your knowledge, the SSB interview preparation is about developing and showcasing your personality, leadership, and Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). This guide from Path Finder Defence Academy covers every aspect of the 5-day SSB process.

Day 1: SSB Screening Test

The SSB screening test is your first hurdle. It consists of two parts:

  • OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating): Verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests. These are timed tests assessing your basic intelligence and cognitive ability.
  • PPDT (Picture Perception & Discussion Test): You are shown a hazy picture for 30 seconds, asked to write a story based on it, and then narrate it in a group discussion. The assessors evaluate your observation, imagination, and group behaviour.

Tip: In PPDT, write a positive story with a central character showing leadership. During group discussion, be assertive but not aggressive. Listen to others and build on their ideas.

Days 2-3: SSB Psychology Tests

The SSB psychology test is designed to assess your subconscious mind. It includes:

  • TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): 12 pictures shown for 30 seconds each. Write a story for each with a hero, a problem, and a positive resolution. Your stories reveal your thought patterns and personality.
  • WAT (Word Association Test): 60 words shown one by one (15 seconds each). Write the first sentence that comes to your mind. This reveals your spontaneous thinking and attitude.
  • SRT (Situation Reaction Test): 60 real-life situations presented (30 minutes). Write what you would do in each situation. Your responses should show initiative, resourcefulness, and decisiveness.
  • Self Description (SD): Write what your parents, teachers, friends, and you yourself think about you. This should be honest and consistent with your TAT/WAT/SRT responses.

Days 3-4: SSB GTO Tasks

SSB GTO tasks (Group Testing Officer tasks) assess your leadership, teamwork, and practical intelligence in outdoor group activities:

  • Group Discussion (GD): Two topics discussed in a group. Show balanced participation and logical thinking.
  • GPE (Group Planning Exercise): A model with obstacles is shown. The group plans and presents solutions to problems. Then individual written solutions are taken.
  • PGT (Progressive Group Task): Physical obstacles to cross as a group using limited resources (planks, ropes, etc.).
  • HGT (Half Group Task): Similar to PGT but with a smaller group to evaluate individual contribution.
  • Lecturette: Speak for 3 minutes on a topic from 4 given options. This tests your communication skills and knowledge.
  • Command Task: You lead 2-3 subordinates to complete a physical obstacle. This directly tests your leadership and command ability.
  • Snake Race / Group Obstacle Race: Team-based physical challenges testing cooperation and team spirit.
  • Individual Obstacles: 10 physical obstacles to complete individually. Each carries points.

Day 4: Personal Interview

The Personal Interview is a one-on-one conversation with the Interviewing Officer (IO). Common SSB interview questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself and your family background
  • Why do you want to join the armed forces?
  • What are your hobbies and interests?
  • Current affairs and general awareness questions
  • Situational and behavioural questions
  • Questions about your schooling, friends, and life experiences

Tip: Be honest, confident, and natural. The IO is not looking for rehearsed answers but genuine personality traits.

Day 5: Conference

The final day is the Conference where you face the entire SSB board — President, Psychologist, GTO, and IO. This is your last chance to make an impression. Answer questions confidently and maintain composure.
